There is a pyramidal neuron cell body in the center of this micrograph. Compare this to the image of a cerebrum section, HA23A. It has a single, large apical dendrite that slants up off the top of the micrograph and two secondary dendrites that extend off each bottom corner of the cell body. A short distance from the cell body the dendrites branch and start to be covered by spines, which increase the cell surface area for synaptic contact (HA24). The axon (a) leaves the cell body from the middle of the pyramid's base and runs down to synapse in cortical layers below.
