In the brain, some neurons have very large dendrites which serve to integrate information from thousands of axons. One of these neurons, pyramidal cells (A), are found in the cerebral cortex. They have triangular cell bodies and large, apical dendrites (arrows) that span two or more of the six layers of neurons in the cerebrum. Between the large neuron cell bodies you can see numerous dendrites and axons that interconnect them. B shows large purkinje cell neurons in the gray matter of the cerebellum. These cells are remarkable for their elaborate apical dendritic arbors (arrows), only part of which is shown in this section.
