This image shows two sensory receptors (mechanoreceptors) that are encapsulated nerve endings. A shows Pacinian corpuscles which sense vibration and pressure. It is surrounded by exocrine glands and is next to a peripheral ganglion. The many layers of supporting cells press upon a central specialized nerve ending to create an action potential. B shows a Meissner's corpuscle which senses light touch. It is located in a papilla of the dermis next to the basal layer of epidermal cells. At the center of the supportive cells is a specialized, unmyelinated nerve ending.
