When the membrana granulosa has sloughed, the atretic follicle may become an interstitial gland (HA10). In interstitial glands, the theca interna (ti) is much thicker than it is around growing follicles and these thecal cells form columns radiating away from the old antrum (a). These cells secrete androgens including testosterone.
