In atretic follicles the membrana granulosa cells shrink and the nuclei become pyknotic - condensed and very darkly stained (HA9, arrows). Sometimes the nuclei are fragmented, indicating apoptosis. Often the membrana granulosa cells slough off into the antrum (HA8&9).
