The urethra (HA16) is lined by urothelium as it leaves the bladder. The lamina propria is a loose CT that contains a venous plexus (arrows). Surrounding its mucosa, the muscularis layer includes inner longitudinal and outer circular layers of smooth muscle. These are part of the internal urethral sphincter that keeps the urethra closed except during urination.
