HA4: Epiglottis, monkey

Resp04l
Both the laryngeal and lingual surfaces are lined by mucosal, stratified squamous epithelium. HA4 shows a higher magnification image of the laryngeal surface. A taste bud (arrow) is present on the laryngeal surface of the epiglottis. Some authors have suggested that these taste buds may be important in initiating reflexes protecting the airway (J Anatomy 1998, 193:617). At the base of the laryngeal surface of the epiglottis. the mucosal stratified squamous epithelium transitions to respiratory epithelium.
