In the bone adjacent to the suture, note the cross and longitudinal sections of collagen type I fibers (HA15, arrows). During preparation, these large collagen bundles shrank, so there are spaces between them and the bone, which did not shrink. These fibers are collagen I bundles of a ligament that holds two flat bones together. In other locations these fibers of tendons attach muscle to bone.
