HA9

Bone09o
One of the bony spicules (HA8, right), is shown at higher magnification in HA9. There is a layer of osteoblasts surrounding the spicule (HA9). The osteoblasts are taller on the side of the spicule facing the epidermis because the growth of the bone is toward the skin. Within the bone, look for the nuclei of osteocytes. In some places, at the interface between the osteoblasts and the bone, you will find a narrow band that stains pale green (HA9, arrow). This is osteoid, bone matrix that has not yet been calcified.
