The vagina (HA32) has a stratified squamous, non-keratinizing epithelium, with a lamina propria and a muscular layer (not shown). The epithelium undergoes subtle changes during the menstrual cycle with the rate of desquamation being higher during the progestational phase than during the estrogenic phase. Note that the lamina propria is very thick and vascular (arrows). There are no glands in the vagina, so leakage of fluid from the vasculature of the lamina propria plays a role in lubrication during sexual stimulation.
