HA4 is a very low magnification LM (cell nuclei are tiny dots) of the wall of the small intestine. Finger-shaped structures, called villi (v) project into the lumen. This organ is lined with simple epithelium with a specialized cell type, the goblet cell (red in this stain), and apical modifications, microvilli, on absorptive cells that provide essential functional features to this tissue. V are villi, C are crypts, CT is dense connective tissue, and ME is the external layer of smooth muscle. The next two images, HA5 and HA6, provide much higher magnification views of this epithelium.
