In HA19, the gastric glands fill most of the image and the stomach lumen is to the right. The connections between the pits (p; ducts) and the adenomeres are not evident because of the plane of section. In HA19 you can see the surface mucous cells lining the pits and lining the stomach lumen. The adenomeres project from the bottom of the pit deep into the lamina propria as far as the muscularis mucosae (not shown). Their epithelium contains large pale parietal (pc) and darkly staining chief (c) cells. Note that there are smooth muscle cells between the glands (HA19 sm). These are extensions of the muscularis mucosae that help express the secretions from the glands.
