At the top of this image is the oral cavity. Note the circumvallate papillae (HA1 v). Some serous and mucous glands are also embedded in the skeletal muscle of the tongue (HA1 arrows), but unlike von Ebner’s glands, these are not given a special name. The skeletal muscle bundles, which fill most of the image, are arranged in different planes because the tongue needs to move in many different directions.
