Notice the striking differences in staining of the dead, amorphous, gray calcified cartilage (HA19 c) and the red bone (b). You can see osteocytes embedded in the dark red calcified matrix. There are osteoblasts lying on top of a layer of pale red osteoid. The arrow points to a chondroclast.
