Compared to the woven arrangement in HA22 and the linear arrangement in HA25, a third arrangement of fibrocartilage occurs in the annulus fibrosis of the disc. This is a "herringbone" arrangement of the dense collagen I bundles and the chondrocytes (HA27). These fibers are organized to withstand stresses in more than one direction.
