How to use the Atlas for each independent study exercise

The Atlas is convenient because it can be used whenever you wish. It does not require a password. Before looking at the images for the first time, watch the introductory video for that exercise.

To get started, click on the name of the lab you wish to work on, e.g. Cell Biology, and then click on HA1 (Histology Atlas 1). Click on Hide Header to give you more space to see the images and captions. Use the arrows at the top to navigate through the images.

Image presentation

At the top of each image, there are three options: Unlabeled, Original, and Labeled. The Original image has arrows to direct your attention. The Labeled image has labeling to help you identify cells and structures. The Unlabeled image is for you to use to test your knowledge of the material as you review each week with your small group.

Develop the habit of looking at the entire image before you focus on individual cells or structures. Your attention will be drawn to labeled structures, but understanding the context (tissue or organ) in which the cells exist is essential. This context will help you identify which organ or location within the body is shown in the image. Next identify the labeled areas and cells. If you have questions about individual images, please take a moment to write them down for clarification at small group meetings or Dr Lyons’ office hours.

What to do after completing an independent study lab.

After you have watched the introductory lab video, viewed all of the images (and associated text) by yourself and with your small group of 3-4, take the quiz. In order to access the quizzes, go to the Anatomy 710 website on Learn@UW and click on “Quizzes” in the Assignments drop down menu. You will find one multiple choice quiz and one short answer image quiz for each topic covered in the course.

These are self-assessment quizzes that will give you immediate feedback on what you have learned. They can be taken at any time and as many times as you wish. You should take the quiz when you feel you have an understanding of the material in each topic. There are ten topics, and the quizzes will be available after the corresponding lectures. To keep up with the material, you should plan to take the quizzes every week.

To encourage you to keep up with the lab material for each block, you will be offered two optional, short-answer, bonus quizzes. The purpose and importance of these bonus quizzes are detailed in the introductory chapter of the coursebook/module.

Office Hours

If you have questions about images, the process of image analysis or wish to discuss the quizzes, please see Dr. Lyons before the Block 1 exam. Office hours are in 1373 HSLC. Regular office hours will be announced and additional hours (for individuals or groups) are available by appointment, gelyons@wisc.edu. You are welcome to attend office hours even if you do not have questions.

Quiz Feature

With Quiz Mode, unlabeled images for each topic within a Unit are presented in random order. Individuals or small groups can use this feature to test themselves on image analysis and prepare for exams.
